Bites alone are not proof. Fleas, mosquitoes, mites and skin conditions all produce similar marks, and about a third of people show no reaction to bed bug bites at all. Physical evidence is what confirms it.

What bed bug bites look like
Itchy red welts, often in a line or small cluster of three or four, on skin exposed while sleeping such as arms, shoulders, neck and ankles. Reactions can take several days to appear, so the bites you notice on Friday may have happened on Monday.
Bed bugs are not a hygiene problem
They feed on blood, not crumbs, so a spotless bedroom is no protection. Infestations start with travel, second-hand furniture, shared laundries and adjoining apartments. Five-star hotels get them for the same reason hostels do.

Why DIY Bed Bug Treatments Make It Worse
Almost every severe infestation we attend was treated at home first. These are the four things that turn one room into three.
Supermarket sprays scatter them
Repellent aerosols kill the few bugs they hit directly and drive the rest out of the mattress into skirting boards, power points and the next bedroom. The infestation spreads instead of shrinking.
Sleeping on the sofa spreads it
Bed bugs follow carbon dioxide and body heat. Moving to the lounge simply relocates the food source, and within a fortnight the lounge suite is infested as well. Stay in the same bed until treatment is complete.
Throwing out the mattress rarely helps
Only about half the population lives on the bed. The rest is in the frame, bedside tables, carpet edge and wall cavity. Dragging an infested mattress through the house also seeds bugs along the way.
Waiting them out does not work
Adult bed bugs survive several months without a blood meal, and longer in cool conditions. Leaving a room empty over a holiday does not starve them out, it just delays the treatment.

Preparation
How To Prepare Your Bedroom
- Strip all bedding and wash it at 60 degrees or above, then tumble dry on hot for at least 30 minutes. Heat, not detergent, is what kills the eggs.
- Bag the washed items in sealed plastic and keep them out of the room until the second visit is done.
- Empty bedside drawers and wardrobes on the bed wall so we can treat the backs and runners.
- Vacuum the carpet edge, mattress seams and frame, then seal the vacuum bag and put it straight in the outside bin.
- Pull furniture 30 cm away from the walls so skirting and power point surrounds can be reached.
- Do not spray anything yourself in the days before we arrive.

Prevention
Stopping Bed Bugs Coming Home With You
Check the room before you unpack
Pull back the sheet and look along the mattress piping and behind the bed head with a phone torch. Faecal spotting shows up on white piping straight away. Keep luggage on the rack or in the bathroom rather than on the bed.
Treat luggage as the vector
Unpack in the laundry rather than the bedroom when you get home. Run everything, worn or not, through a hot dryer cycle for 30 minutes. Store suitcases in the garage rather than under the bed.
Be careful with second-hand furniture
Kerbside mattresses, marketplace bed frames and used lounges are a common source. Inspect joints, screw holes and seams before it comes inside, and avoid anything that has been left out in the rain with visible spotting.
Use mattress and base encasements
A zippered bed bug encasement traps anything already inside and removes hundreds of hiding places. It also makes future monitoring much easier, since any new spotting appears on a plain white surface.

How many treatments do
bed bugs need?
Two visits, 10 to 14
days apart, resolves most infestations. The gap is deliberate. Eggs are protected by
a hard shell that insecticide does not penetrate, so the second visit targets nymphs
once they hatch and before they can breed. Severe or long-running infestations
occasionally need a third visit.
Do I have to throw out
my mattress?
Usually not. Steam
treatment of the seams and piping followed by a zippered encasement saves almost
every mattress. Replacing the mattress without treating the room is the worst
outcome, because the new one is infested within days by the population living in the
frame and skirting.
Can I sleep in the room
after treatment?
Yes, and you should.
Re-enter about four hours after treatment once surfaces are dry, then keep sleeping
in the treated bed. Your presence draws surviving bugs across the treated surfaces,
which is exactly what the residual is there for. Moving to another room spreads the
infestation.
Are bed bugs a sign of
a dirty house?
No. Bed bugs feed on
blood, so cleanliness has no bearing on whether you get them. They arrive on
luggage, second-hand furniture, work bags and through shared walls in apartments.
Clutter makes treatment harder, but it does not cause an infestation.
Do bed bugs spread
disease?
There is no evidence
that bed bugs transmit disease to humans. The real harm is secondary. Scratched
bites become infected, sleep is badly disrupted, and the anxiety of an ongoing
infestation affects people significantly. Heavy infestations can also cause anaemia
in the very young and the elderly.

Will my neighbours need treating?

established, adjoining units should at least be inspected. Bed bugs travel along
service risers, conduit and shared skirting. We can report to your strata manager
