Spider Problems - More Than Just Webs

Why Spiders Become a Pest in Homes & Businesses

While many spiders are harmless, Australia is home to some of the world's most venomous species. An infestation can lead to unsightly webs, constant cleaning, and a genuine safety risk for your family and pets. Spiders thrive in undisturbed areas, making professional treatment essential for control.

  • 1

    Venomous Species & Safety Risks

Dangerous spiders like Redbacks and Funnel-webs can pose a serious health threat, especially to children and pets who may disturb them in the garden or shed.

  • 2

    Unsightly Webs & Constant Cleaning

Persistent webs on windows, eaves, outdoor furniture, and doorways make your property look unkempt and require endless cleaning.

  • 3

    Hidden Breeding Areas

Spiders breed in cracks, weep holes, roof voids, and under furniture, meaning surface sprays won't solve the underlying problem.

Quick answer

How do you get rid of spiders around a house?

Spiders are controlled by removing webs and egg sacs, then applying a residual insecticide to the surfaces they walk across: eaves, window frames, door reveals, fence lines, retaining walls and the roof void. Because spiders eat other insects, treating the general pest population at the same time removes their food supply. A spider treatment in Sydney or Perth costs $180 to $280 and protects the property for 6 to 12 months.

Treatment time
45 to 90 minutes for a standard home
Time to see results
Web spinners drop off within 2 to 5 days
Protection
6 to 12 months, longer under sheltered eaves

Identification

Dangerous And Common Spiders In Sydney And Perth

Australia has a serious reputation for spiders, though there has not been a death from a funnel web since antivenom became available in 1981. What matters practically is knowing which species needs urgent first aid, which needs treatment, and which is harmless and worth leaving alone.

Common Australian spiders, identifying features, where they live and their risk to people
Spider How to recognise it Where you find it Risk
Sydney funnel web Atrax robustus Glossy black, stocky, 15 to 35 mm, rears up with fangs raised when threatened Burrows in cool damp soil, under rockeries, logs and pot plants. Males wander after summer rain Medically significant. Apply pressure immobilisation bandage and call 000
Redback Latrodectus hasselti Black with a red or orange stripe on the abdomen, untidy web with a funnel retreat Under outdoor furniture, letterboxes, meter boxes, barbecues, children's play equipment Medically significant. Apply a cold pack and seek medical advice
Mouse spider Missulena species Bulbous head, glossy black, males often with a red tinge on the jaws Ground burrows, common in Perth suburbs near bushland and river flats Treat as serious. First aid the same as funnel web
White-tailed spider Lampona species Slender dark grey body, 12 to 18 mm, distinct white spot at the tail tip Indoors at night, in laundry, bedding and towels left on the floor. Hunts other spiders Painful bite. Research has not linked it to skin necrosis
Black house spider Badumna insignis Dark charcoal, velvety, builds messy funnel webs with a lacy sheet Window frames, brickwork corners, gutters, under eaves Low. Painful bite but not dangerous. The main web nuisance species
Huntsman Isopeda, Holconia Large flat body, legs held crab-like to the side, moves in fast bursts Behind curtains, sun visors in cars, under bark and roof timbers Harmless and useful. Eats cockroaches, best relocated outside
Golden orb weaver and garden orb weaver Large round webs strung across paths and between shrubs, rebuilt nightly Gardens, verandah corners, between clothesline and fence Harmless. A nuisance rather than a hazard

Emergency

Spider Bite First Aid In Australia

Different spiders need different first aid, and using the wrong method can make things worse. If you are ever unsure, call 000 or the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26.

Funnel web or mouse spider

Call 000 immediately. Apply a pressure immobilisation bandage firmly over the bite and up the whole limb, then splint it and keep the person still. Do not wash the bite site, because venom traces help staff identify the spider. Antivenom is stocked at major hospitals.

Redback spider

Do not use a pressure bandage, as the venom acts slowly and compression increases pain. Apply an ice pack, keep the person calm and seek medical advice. Pain can worsen over several hours and sometimes spreads beyond the bite site.

All other spiders

Wash the area with soap and water, apply a cold pack for the pain and monitor it. See a doctor if there is spreading redness, fever, severe pain or any sign of infection. Photograph the spider if you safely can, since identification changes the advice.

Seasonality

When Spider Activity Peaks

Spring. Egg sacs laid in winter hatch and hundreds of spiderlings disperse on silk threads. This is when webs suddenly appear across every window frame at once.

Summer. Peak feeding season. Warm nights and abundant insects around outdoor lighting mean orb weavers rebuild large webs across paths and doorways every evening.

Late summer and early autumn. Male funnel webs leave their burrows to search for mates, particularly after heavy rain and on humid nights. This is when they end up in pools, garages and laundries.

Winter. Activity drops outside, but huntsman and white-tailed spiders move indoors seeking warmth, so indoor sightings often increase while outdoor webs decrease.

Never leave shoes outside. Check boots, gloves, garden furniture cushions and pool toys before use during summer and autumn. Most redback and funnel web bites in Australia happen when someone puts a hand or foot somewhere a spider was sheltering.

Prevention

Making Your Property Less Attractive To Spiders

Cut the insect supply

Spiders follow food. Switching outdoor lighting to warm LED or sensor-only operation reduces the moths and midges that draw web builders to your doorway. This alone makes a visible difference within a fortnight.

De-web regularly

Run a broom over eaves, window reveals, gutters and pergola corners each month. Removing webs and egg sacs before they hatch is the cheapest control measure available, and it makes any residual treatment last noticeably longer.

Clear the harbourage

Stacked timber, loose bricks, pot plants sitting directly on soil, thick mulch against the wall and rockeries beside the pool are prime funnel web and redback habitat. Raise pots on feet and store materials off the ground.

Seal and screen

Fit door seals and repair torn flyscreens so huntsman and white-tailed spiders cannot wander in at night. Check weep holes and vents, and keep the garage roller door seal in good condition.

Spider Control FAQs

Practical answers on safety, timing and what treatment actually does. Ask us anything.

Does spider spray kill funnel webs?

Residual treatment kills funnel webs that walk across a treated surface, which is why we treat garage thresholds, door reveals, paths and pool surrounds. It does not treat the burrow itself. Funnel webs live in the ground, so removing rockeries, thick mulch and ground-level pot plants near doorways matters as much as the chemical.

Why are there more spiders after treatment?

For the first few days you will see spiders out in the open that were previously hidden in webs and cracks. The product affects their nervous system and drives them out before they die. It is a sign the treatment has contacted the population, and it settles within about a week.

How long does spider treatment last?

Six to twelve months on protected surfaces such as eaves, window frames and roof voids. Exposed surfaces that take direct sun and rain break down faster, closer to three to six months. Annual treatment before spring gives the best result because it removes the population before egg sacs hatch.

Do I need to wash the webs off first?

No, de-webbing is part of the service. We brush down webs and egg sacs before treating so the residual lands on the surface rather than on old silk. Do not pressure wash the treated exterior afterwards, since that strips the product straight off.

Is spider treatment safe for pets, kids and bees?

Yes, when applied properly. Products are APVMA-registered and applied to structural surfaces rather than flowering plants, so foraging bees are not exposed. Keep children and pets off treated surfaces until dry, usually one to two hours. Cover fish ponds and turn off pond pumps during the visit.

How much does spider control cost?

An external spider treatment is $180 to $240 with a six month warranty. Adding internal areas, the roof void and garage brings it to $230 to $280. A general pest package that also covers cockroaches and ants is $280 to $360 with a 12 month warranty.

Are white-tailed spiders really flesh eating?

No. A well-known Australian clinical study followed 130 confirmed white-tailed spider bites and found no cases of necrotic ulceration. The bite causes local pain and redness. Ulcers previously blamed on these spiders were caused by bacterial infections and other conditions.

Should I kill huntsman spiders?

There is no need. Huntsman are harmless to people and are effective predators of cockroaches and moths. Coax one into a container with a sheet of paper and release it in the garden. Our external treatment reduces them naturally by cutting off their food supply.

When is the best time of year to treat for spiders?

Early spring, from September, is ideal because it targets the population before egg sacs hatch and before summer insect numbers peak. Treatment works year round, and we take a large volume of urgent redback and funnel web calls from December through March.

Can you treat around a pool and children's play equipment?

Yes, and it is one of our most requested jobs. Redbacks favour the underside of slides, cubby house frames, trampoline legs, pool fence rails and outdoor furniture. We treat those surfaces specifically and keep the product away from the water itself.
