Moth Infestations - The Damage You Don't See

Why Moths Cause Costly Damage in Homes & Businesses

The small moths you see flying are rarely the problem. The real damage is caused by their larvae, which feast on natural fibres (clothes moths) or stored food (pantry moths) in dark, undisturbed areas, leading to significant financial loss and waste.

  • 1

    Damage to Valuable Fabrics

Clothes moth larvae destroy wool, silk, cashmere, fur, and leather, ruining expensive clothing, rugs, and upholstery.

  • 2

    Food Contamination & Waste

Pantry moth larvae infest grains, cereals, nuts, and spices, contaminating them with webbing and droppings, forcing you to discard food.

  • 3

    Hidden Breeding Grounds

Larvae develop in hidden areas like closet corners, under furniture, or deep within food packets, making them extremely difficult to eliminate with DIY methods.

Simple, Proven Tips to Keep Moths Out

Proactive storage and cleaning habits our Sydney & Perth customers use to prevent moth infestations.

Clean Clothes Before Storing

Always wash or dry-clean clothes, especially woolens, before long-term storage as moths are attracted to stains.

Use Airtight Storage

Store seasonal clothing in airtight bags or sealed plastic tubs. Do the same for flour, grains, and cereals.

Vacuum Regularly

Frequently vacuum carpets, closets, pantries, and under furniture to remove larvae and eggs.

Use Natural Repellents

Place cedar blocks or lavender sachets in drawers and closets as a natural deterrent (not a cure).

Rotate Pantry Stock

Use the "first in, first out" method for pantry items and inspect packages for signs of webbing.

Reduce Humidity

Keep storage areas dry and well-ventilated, as moths thrive in humid conditions.

Do this

  • • Inspect secondhand furniture or rugs before bringing them inside
  • • Freeze small, infested items for 72 hours to kill larvae
  • • Use pheromone traps to monitor for pantry moth activity

Avoid this

  • • Storing unwashed woolen or silk garments for long periods
  • • Ignoring just a "few" small moths flying around
  • • Relying solely on mothballs, which can be hazardous

Quick answer

How do you get rid of moths in a house?

Moths are eliminated by finding and destroying the larval source, because the flying adults do no damage at all. For clothes moths that means treating wardrobes, carpet edges and stored woollens. For pantry moths it means locating the infested product and treating shelving and cracks. A professional moth treatment combines a residual insecticide, pheromone monitoring traps and an insect growth regulator, and costs $200 to $350 for a standard home.

Treatment time
60 to 90 minutes for a standard home
Adults gone
Within 3 to 7 days
Full cycle broken
4 to 6 weeks with monitoring traps in place

Identification

Clothes Moths, Pantry Moths And The Ones That Do No Harm

Most moths that come inside are harmless natives drawn to a light. Only a small number are genuine household pests, and they behave very differently from each other, so identifying which one you have determines the whole treatment.

Moth species found in Australian homes, what the larvae feed on and where the infestation sits
Species Appearance What the larvae eat Where to look
Common clothes moth Tineola bisselliella 6 to 8 mm, plain golden buff, avoids light and scuttles rather than flies Keratin in wool, cashmere, silk, felt, feathers and fur Dark wardrobe corners, under heavy furniture, carpet edges, stored blankets
Case-bearing clothes moth Tinea pellionella Similar size, three faint dark spots on the wings Same as above, and the larva drags a silk case with it Wall and ceiling junctions in wardrobes, cases look like small grains of rice
Indian meal moth Plodia interpunctella 8 to 10 mm, wings pale at the base and coppery bronze at the tips Flour, rice, cereal, nuts, dried fruit, pet food, birdseed, chocolate Pantry shelving, packet seams, silk webbing in corners of the cupboard
Angoumois grain moth and warehouse moth Small, straw coloured to grey brown Whole grains, stored seed and bulk dry goods Bulk storage, pet and poultry feed bins, garage shelving
Bogong moth and native species Larger, dark brown, arrives in numbers in spring Nothing in your home. Larvae live in paddocks Around lights and windows. Harmless and best excluded rather than treated

The moth you see is not the one causing damage. Adult clothes moths have no functional mouthparts and never eat fabric. Every hole in a jumper is the work of a larva that hatched weeks earlier. Killing the adults you notice does nothing about the eggs and larvae already in the wardrobe, which is why aerosols give the impression of working and then the damage continues.

Signs

What To Look For

  • Irregular holes in wool. Usually along folds, under collars and at the underarm where perspiration and body oils have soaked into the fibre.
  • Silken tubes and webbing. Fine silk trails on the underside of rugs, in wardrobe corners and across pantry shelving.
  • Sand-like frass. Gritty larval droppings that match the colour of whatever the larvae have been eating, collecting at the bottom of the wardrobe.
  • Clumped or webbed food. Flour and cereal stuck together in strands, with small white caterpillars threading through it.
  • Larvae climbing walls. Pantry moth larvae leave the food to pupate, so caterpillars on the ceiling above the pantry are a reliable sign.
  • Bare patches in rugs. Wool carpet under a sofa or a rarely moved bed loses pile in patches, because larvae need dark and stillness.

The cost

What Moths Destroy

Wool carpet and rugs

Handmade wool and silk rugs are among the most expensive items in many homes, and larvae work from the underside where nobody looks. Damage is often discovered only when the rug is lifted for cleaning, by which time the pile is gone in patches.

Suits, knitwear and heirlooms

Wool suits, cashmere, military uniforms, christening gowns and stored blankets are prime targets, particularly if they were put away without cleaning. Larvae are drawn to sweat, food traces and hair products in the fibre.

Pantry stock and pet food

One infested bag of birdseed or dog biscuits can seed an entire kitchen. Larvae chew through thin plastic and cardboard, so unopened packets are not automatically safe.

Insulation and taxidermy

Felted underlay, wool insulation batts, feather pillows, mounted specimens and even piano felt all contain keratin and can support a population well away from the wardrobe.

Prevention

Keeping Moths Out For Good

Clean before storing. Larvae are drawn to perspiration, food residue and hair product, not to clean wool. Dry clean or wash woollens before they go away for the season.

Store in sealed containers. Airtight boxes or vacuum bags beat garment bags, since larvae chew through thin fabric covers. For the pantry, decant flour, rice and pet food into glass or hard plastic with a good seal.

Freeze what you cannot wash. Seventy-two hours at minus 18 degrees kills every life stage in a knit or a small rug. Seal the item in plastic first so condensation does not damage it.

Move the furniture. Vacuum under beds, sofas and wardrobes monthly and along carpet edges with the crevice tool. Movement and light are what larvae avoid most.

Use pheromone traps as an early warning. They catch males and tell you a population is building long before you find holes. They do not control an infestation on their own.

Moth Control FAQs

Clothes moths, pantry moths and what actually works. Ask our team.

Do mothballs actually work?

Only in a sealed container at a high enough vapour concentration, which an open wardrobe never reaches. In a normal cupboard they act as a weak repellent while the larvae already in the fabric keep feeding. Naphthalene is also a health concern in enclosed living spaces, particularly around infants.

Does cedar or lavender stop moths?

Fresh cedar oil repels adults to a limited degree and can kill very young larvae, but the effect fades within months as the oil dries out. Neither cedar nor lavender kills eggs or established larvae. Treat them as a mild deterrent for clean, stored clothing rather than a treatment.

Why do I only get moths in one wardrobe?

Because that is where the food and the conditions are. Clothes moth larvae need keratin, darkness and stillness. A wardrobe holding wool coats that are rarely worn, in a room that is seldom opened, is close to perfect habitat. The rest of the house has nothing they want.

How did pantry moths get into sealed packets?

They were almost certainly already inside as eggs when you bought the product. Indian meal moth infestations usually begin at the mill, warehouse or store. Larvae also chew through thin plastic and cardboard, so an unopened packet next to an infested one is not safe.

Can I save a jumper with moth holes?

The garment can be saved from further damage even if the holes need invisible mending. Seal it in plastic and freeze it at minus 18 degrees for 72 hours, or have it dry cleaned. Both kill eggs and larvae. Do not return it to the wardrobe until the room has been treated.

How much does moth treatment cost?

A pantry moth treatment is $200 to $260. A clothes moth treatment covering wardrobes and carpet is $260 to $350. Whole house or multi-room work with a follow-up visit runs $380 to $550. Commercial monitoring programmes are quoted after a site visit.

Do I have to empty the wardrobe and pantry?

Yes, and it matters. Emptying lets us treat the shelving, corners, rails and skirting where eggs and larvae sit. For the pantry, discard visibly infested product, then wipe every shelf and the grooves the shelf brackets sit in. We send a preparation list when you book.

Are moth treatments safe around clothing and food?

Yes. Products are APVMA-registered and applied to the wardrobe structure, carpet edges and shelving rather than onto garments or food. Food is removed before we treat and shelving is lined before it goes back. Clothing can be returned once surfaces are dry.

Do pheromone traps get rid of moths?

They catch adult males, which reduces mating and tells you whether numbers are rising or falling. They do not touch the eggs and larvae doing the damage. Traps are a monitoring tool that we use alongside treatment, not a replacement for it.

Are the moths around my outside light a problem?

Almost never. Those are native species whose larvae live in paddocks and bushland, and they cause no household damage. Switching to warm-toned or sensor lighting and fitting good flyscreens is all that is needed. Clothes moths avoid light and are rarely seen flying at all.
