How do you get rid of fleas in a house?
Fleas are eliminated by treating the house and the pet at the same time. Only about 5 per cent of a flea population is on the animal. The other 95 per cent is eggs, larvae and pupae in carpet, bedding, subfloor and soil. A professional treatment applies an adulticide plus an insect growth regulator that stops eggs and larvae developing, and costs $200 to $320 for a standard home. Vacuuming daily for two weeks afterwards is what triggers the remaining pupae to hatch into the treatment.

Why The Flea Life Cycle Decides Everything
Understanding the four stages explains why fleas seem to come back a week after you treat them, and why treating only the pet never works. The cat flea, Ctenocephalides felis, is the species behind almost every Australian household infestation, including on dogs.

This is why you vacuum after treatment, not before it only. Pupae are the one stage insecticide cannot reach, and they can stay dormant for months. The vibration and warmth of a vacuum cleaner tells them a host has arrived, so they hatch straight into the treated carpet and die. Vacuuming daily for 14 days is part of the treatment, not an optional extra. It also explains why a house left empty over the holidays greets returning owners with a wave of fleas at the front door.

How To Confirm You Have Fleas
- Flea dirt. Black specks in the pet's coat that turn rusty red when placed on damp white paper. That colour is digested blood, and it confirms fleas rather than ordinary dirt.
- Bites around the ankles. Fleas cannot fly, so they jump from floor level. Clusters of small itchy red bites below the knee are the classic pattern.
- Pet scratching and hair loss. Persistent scratching, biting at the base of the tail, and thinning fur along the back and hind legs point to flea allergy dermatitis.
- The white sock test. Walk slowly across the carpet in long white socks. Fleas jump on and show up clearly against the fabric.
- Activity in an empty property. Fleas in a house with no pet usually means the previous occupant had one, or a possum, rat or stray cat has been living under the floor or in the roof.

What Fleas Can Cause
Flea allergy dermatitis
The most common skin disease in Australian cats and dogs. Sensitive animals react to proteins in flea saliva, so a single bite can trigger days of intense itching, raw skin and secondary infection that needs veterinary treatment.
Tapeworm transmission
Fleas carry the larval stage of Dipylidium caninum. A pet that swallows an infected flea while grooming develops tapeworm, which is why vets recommend worming after any flea infestation.
Anaemia in young animals
A heavy infestation on a kitten or puppy causes serious blood loss. Pale gums and lethargy in a young animal with fleas is a veterinary emergency, not something to treat at home.
Cat scratch disease and murine typhus
Fleas spread Bartonella henselae between cats, which causes cat scratch disease in people. Flea-borne typhus has also been recorded in parts of Western Australia, associated with rodents and their fleas.

- Vacuum all carpet, rugs and under furniture, then seal the bag and bin it outside.
- Wash pet bedding on a hot cycle and dry it thoroughly.
- Mow the lawn and rake back mulch where the pet lies outside.
- Book the pet in for a vet-recommended flea treatment on the same day.
- Clear floor space so we can treat carpet edges and under beds.
After the treatment
- Stay out for 3 to 4 hours and ventilate when you return.
- Vacuum every day for 14 days to trigger the pupae to hatch.
- Do not steam clean or shampoo carpets for at least 3 weeks.
- Expect to still see a few fleas for up to two weeks. That is the cocoon stage hatching, not a failed treatment.
- Keep the pet's own flea product current every month.
Seasonality
When Flea Numbers Peak In Australia
Flea development is driven by humidity and temperature. Between about 21 and 32 degrees with humidity above 70 per cent, the full cycle from egg to adult takes as little as 14 days.
Spring build-up
Pupae that stayed dormant through winter hatch as soon as the weather warms. Households that had no fleas in August are often overrun by early October.
Summer peak
Sydney's humid summer is close to ideal for fleas. Perth's drier heat slows outdoor development, so the infestation concentrates indoors in air-conditioned rooms and shaded subfloors.
Autumn spike after holidays
Coming home from a break to a sudden flea problem is common. Pupae accumulate in an empty house, then hatch en masse the moment vibration and body warmth return.
Winter indoors
Heated homes keep the cycle running all winter, particularly in carpeted bedrooms and near the pet's bed. Fleas do not simply die off in the cold if the house stays warm.

Why am I still seeing
fleas after the treatment?
Because the pupal
stage is sealed inside a protective cocoon that insecticide cannot penetrate. Those
pupae keep hatching for up to two weeks and die shortly after touching the treated
carpet. Daily vacuuming speeds it up by triggering them to emerge. If you are still
seeing fleas after 21 days, call us and we will return.
Do I need to treat my
pet as well?
Yes, on the same day.
We treat the environment, which holds 95 per cent of the population, and a
vet-recommended spot-on or oral product handles the adults living on the animal.
Treating one without the other leaves a reservoir that restarts the infestation.
Never apply a dog product to a cat, as permethrin is toxic to cats.
I have no pets. How did
I get fleas?
Usually from a
previous occupant's pet, or from wildlife. Rats, possums and stray cats living in
the subfloor or roof void drop flea eggs continuously. When the host is removed, the
hungry fleas move indoors looking for a replacement, which is why we inspect for a
wildlife source rather than only treating the carpet.
Is flea treatment safe
for pets and children?
Yes, once dry. Keep
people and animals out for 3 to 4 hours and ventilate on return. Fish tanks must be
covered with the air pump switched off, and birds and reptiles should be moved out
for the day, as they are far more sensitive to insecticide than mammals. Tell us
about them when you book.
How much does flea
treatment cost?
A unit or apartment
is $200 to $250. A standard house treated inside and outside is $260 to $320. Vacant
property and end of lease treatments with a certificate are $220 to $300. Severe
infestations needing two visits are $380 to $480.
Do flea bombs work?
Poorly. A fogger
settles on exposed surfaces only, so it misses the base of the carpet pile where
larvae live, and it does not reach under furniture, along skirting or into the
subfloor. Most contain no growth regulator, so eggs and larvae carry on developing.
Should the yard be
treated too?
If the pet spends
time outdoors, yes. Fleas develop in shaded, humid areas such as under decks, in
mulched garden beds, beside the kennel and in the subfloor. Treating indoors while
leaving an outdoor reservoir means reinfestation within a couple of weeks.
Can I steam clean the
carpets after treatment?
Not for at least
three weeks. Steam cleaning and shampooing strip the residual film and the growth
regulator out of the carpet, which lets the surviving eggs and pupae complete their
cycle. If carpets need cleaning, do it before we treat rather than after.
Do fleas bite people?
They do, though
people are a second choice rather than a preferred host. Bites appear as small itchy
red spots in clusters, usually on ankles and lower legs because fleas jump from the
floor. Fleas do not live on people the way head lice do.
I am moving out of a
rental. Do I need a flea certificate?
Most tenancy
agreements that permitted a pet require professional flea treatment at the end of
the lease. We provide a dated certificate listing the address, products and APVMA
registration numbers, which is what agents ask for at the final inspection.
