The lawful and practical approach is to wait until the brood has fledged, then clean and proof immediately so the site cannot be reused. Choosing The Right Bird Proofing System
Stainless steel spikes
Best for narrow ledges, parapets, signage tops, pipes and beams where birds land and perch. Spikes do not injure birds, they simply remove the landing surface. Stainless outlasts plastic, which becomes brittle in Australian UV within a few seasons.
Bird netting
The most complete exclusion method, used to close off courtyards, atriums, loading docks, undercroft car parks and warehouse rafters. Mesh size is matched to the species, 50 mm for pigeons and 19 mm for sparrows and starlings, and it is tensioned so nothing can get behind it.
Post and wire systems

Is it legal to remove a
bird nest in Australia?
It depends on the
species. Nests of introduced birds such as feral pigeons, common mynas, starlings
and sparrows can be removed. Native birds are protected under state legislation and
their nests must not be disturbed. In either case we do not touch a nest containing
eggs or dependent chicks, we wait until the brood has fledged and proof the site
immediately after.
Do bird spikes hurt the
birds?
No. Spikes are blunt
at the tip and work by removing the flat landing surface, so the bird simply chooses
somewhere else. They are a standard humane exclusion product used on heritage
buildings and public infrastructure worldwide.
Why do I have biting
mites after the birds left?
Because the mites
stayed behind. A nest can hold tens of thousands of bird mites, and once the chicks
fledge those mites move through the ceiling in search of a host, biting people below
on the arms and neck. Removing the nest and treating the void resolves it, and
treating the room alone does not.
Are pigeons nesting
under my solar panels a problem?
Yes, and it is one of
the fastest growing bird jobs in Australia. Nest material under panels blocks
airflow and reduces output, droppings corrode mounting rails and roof sheeting, and
debris washes into gutters. A clipped mesh skirt around the panel perimeter closes
the gap without affecting the panels or the warranty.
How much does bird
proofing cost?
A site inspection and
proofing plan is $150 to $300. Nest removal with clean-up and disinfection runs $300

Do ultrasonic
repellers, gels or plastic owls work?
Not for long. Birds
habituate to sound and visual deterrents within days once they see nothing bad
happens. Optical gels lose effect as they weather and can trap small birds and
insects. Physical exclusion is the only method that reliably lasts, which is why it
is what commercial sites use.
Can I clean up bird
droppings myself?
Small fresh amounts,
yes, with gloves and by wetting the area first. Never dry sweep, scrape or pressure
wash accumulated guano, because that aerosolises fungal spores linked to
histoplasmosis and cryptococcosis. Larger accumulations should be handled with a P2
respirator and disposable coveralls.
How long does bird
netting last?
UV-stabilised netting
with stainless fixings lasts around ten years in Australian conditions, and quality
stainless spikes last longer than that. Cheaper plastic spikes and non-stabilised
netting fail within two or three summers, which is why we do not use them.
Will proofing one ledge
just move the birds along the building?
It will if the
proofing is done piecemeal, which is the most common mistake on commercial
buildings. We assess the whole facade and treat every viable perch in the same
programme, in priority order if the work has to be staged across budget periods.
