The Problem - Silent Destroyers

Why a Silverfish Infestation is More Than Just a Nuisance

Silverfish are nocturnal, moisture-loving insects that thrive in dark, humid areas of your home like bathrooms, basements, and kitchens. They feed on starches and cellulose, silently destroying irreplaceable items and signalling potential underlying dampness issues.

  • 1

    Irreversible Damage to Valuables

They consume paper, glue, and textiles, causing damage to books, documents, photographs, wallpaper, and natural-fibre clothing.

  • 2

    Indicator of Moisture Issues

A significant silverfish population is a strong sign of excess humidity or a water leak, which can lead to more severe problems like mould.

  • 3

    Contamination & Allergies

They can contaminate food sources like flour and cereals, and their shed scales can contribute to household dust and trigger allergies.

How to Prevent Silverfish Infestations

Simple, proactive steps our Sydney & Perth customers can take to deny silverfish the damp conditions they need to survive.

Reduce Humidity

Use dehumidifiers in damp areas and ensure bathrooms and kitchens are well-ventilated.

Seal Cracks & Gaps

Caulk cracks around baseboards, windows, and pipes to eliminate entry points and hiding spots.

Store Items Properly

Keep old books, documents, and clothing in sealed, airtight containers, not cardboard boxes.

Regular Vacuuming

Frequently vacuum carpets, rugs, and upholstery to remove food particles and silverfish eggs.

Fix Leaks Promptly

Address any leaking pipes, taps, or roofing issues immediately to eliminate moisture sources.

Declutter Storage Areas

Remove old stacks of magazines, newspapers, and cardboard boxes that provide food and shelter.

Do this

  • • Identify and reduce sources of humidity
  • • Store paper and fabric items in sealed plastic tubs
  • • Call a professional for a targeted and safe treatment plan

Avoid this

  • • Storing cardboard boxes directly on concrete floors
  • • Ignoring small leaks or poor ventilation
  • • Using ineffective store-bought sprays that only kill on contact

Quick answer

How do you get rid of silverfish permanently?

Silverfish are eliminated by treating the voids where they live and removing the humidity they depend on. A technician applies an insecticidal dust into the roof void, wall cavities and subfloor, then treats bookshelves, wardrobes, skirting and cupboard interiors with a residual. Because silverfish need relative humidity above roughly 75 per cent, fixing ventilation and leaks is what keeps them gone. Treatment costs $180 to $300 and protects for 6 to 12 months.

Treatment time
45 to 90 minutes including roof void
Results
Numbers drop in 7 to 14 days
Dust life in a dry void
Several years while it stays dry and undisturbed

Identification

What Silverfish Are And Why They Are Hard To Shift

Silverfish, Lepisma saccharina, are wingless insects with a flattened, tapering body, metallic scales and three tail filaments. They are among the oldest insect groups on earth, and several of their traits make a casual spray almost useless.

They live for years

Silverfish live three to six years and keep moulting throughout adult life, sometimes more than fifty times. A population builds slowly and quietly, so by the time you notice them the numbers in the roof void are already large.

They survive a year without food

Given enough humidity, a silverfish can go around twelve months without eating. Clearing out the paper and cardboard helps, but it does not starve them out on any useful timescale.

They hide in voids, not rooms

The insects you see on the bathroom floor are a small fraction of the population. The rest sits in the roof void, wall cavities and subfloor, which is why surface sprays in the room change very little.

They are nocturnal and fast

Silverfish move quickly and avoid light, feeding at night on starches, sugars, paper sizing and glue. Most sightings happen when someone turns the bathroom light on after midnight.

What silverfish damage in Australian homes and where they are usually found
What they damage Why Where you find it
Books and documents They feed on the starch sizing in paper and the glue in bindings Bookshelves, filing boxes, stored certificates and photo albums
Wallpaper and paint Paste behind wallpaper is a preferred food, leaving grazed patches and lifted seams Bathrooms, laundries and older homes with wallpapered walls
Clothing and linen They target starch, food stains and body oils rather than the fibre itself Stored cotton, rayon and linen, particularly items put away unwashed
Stored dry goods Flour, rolled oats, pasta and pet food are all starch sources Pantry corners, under shelf liners, inside opened packets
Cardboard and insulation backing Paper facing on plasterboard and batts gives food and shelter together Roof voids, garages, storage boxes stacked against walls

Root cause

Silverfish Are A Humidity Problem

Silverfish cannot maintain their body moisture in dry air. Bring the humidity down and the population cannot sustain itself, whatever else you do.

Ventilate the wet rooms

Run the bathroom exhaust fan for twenty minutes after every shower and check that it vents outside rather than into the roof void, which is a very common fault in Australian homes and one of the biggest causes of a silverfish problem in the ceiling.

Fix the subfloor

Clear vegetation and stored material from subfloor vents, correct drainage that pools against the building, and consider a subfloor fan where the space stays damp. Damp subfloors also invite termites and cockroaches.

Dry out storage areas

Move boxes off concrete floors onto shelving, swap cardboard for sealed plastic tubs, and put a moisture absorber in wardrobes on external walls. Coastal Sydney and riverside Perth suburbs need this most.

Silverfish FAQs

What works, what does not, and why they keep coming back. Ask our team.

Are silverfish dangerous?

They do not bite, sting or transmit disease. The damage is to property rather than health, though their shed scales and droppings can contribute to dust allergy symptoms in sensitive people. The real cost is ruined books, documents, photographs and stored clothing.

Why do I keep finding silverfish in the bathroom and sink?

They are drawn to humidity and end up trapped. A silverfish walks into a smooth porcelain basin or bath at night looking for moisture and cannot climb back out. They do not come up the drain, which is a common assumption, they fall in from the vanity or the wall above.

Does surface spray get rid of silverfish?

Not on its own. Spray kills the individuals it contacts, but the breeding population is in the roof void, wall cavities and subfloor where the spray never reaches. Dusting those voids is what actually reduces numbers, and a dust stays effective for years while it remains dry.

How long does treatment take to work?

Expect a noticeable drop within 7 to 14 days. Silverfish move slowly through a void and need to contact the dust, so it is not immediate. You may see a temporary increase in sightings in the first week as affected insects move out of the cavity.

Do they eat clothes like moths do?

They damage fabric differently. Silverfish target starch, sizing, food stains and body oils rather than the fibre itself, so the damage looks like grazed or thinned patches and yellow staining rather than the clean round holes moths make. Cotton, linen and rayon are affected more than wool.

How much does silverfish treatment cost?

A unit or apartment is $180 to $230. A house treated with roof void dusting and internal residual is $240 to $300 with a 12 month warranty. A general pest package covering silverfish alongside cockroaches, ants and spiders is $280 to $360.

Is the treatment safe around books and documents?

Yes. We treat shelf edges, backs and cavities rather than the items themselves, and use low-residue products where valuable collections are involved. For archives and libraries we prepare a treatment plan around the collection before starting.

Will a dehumidifier alone fix it?

It helps a great deal in the room it serves, and it will stop a new population establishing there. It does nothing for the roof void and wall cavities, and silverfish can survive around a year without food. Combining treatment with humidity control is what gives a lasting result.

Are silverfish a sign of a bigger problem?

Often. A sudden increase usually points to excess moisture, and the same conditions attract cockroaches and, more seriously, termites. When we treat silverfish we check the subfloor and roof void for leaks, blocked vents and a bathroom fan venting into the ceiling, and tell you what we find.

Do silverfish come from outside or are they already in the house?

Both. They live naturally under bark, in leaf litter and in mulch, and they enter through weep holes, subfloor vents and gaps around pipework. They also arrive inside cardboard boxes, second-hand books and stored furniture, which is how many apartment infestations begin.
